Oh boy! THIS is going to be a challenging month. Joe McNally<\/a> helped me figure out how to get my flash off the camera and as I work my way back through his book again, I’m picking up more details but, oh my, this light stuff just isn’t always so intuitive.<\/p>\n

So here is my first attempt — my starting point. There are many flaws (including shadows on the background) but it can only get better, right?<\/p>\n

I decided to also pull back and take a shot of the set up to help me remember what I did. I was crouched behind the tripod and held the camera at desk level.<\/p>\n

The white cardboard is directly across from a window and is acting as a “fill light.” The background probably should have been moved further away in an attempt to get rid of the shadow that the flash was creating, but I was working in pretty tight quarters and couldn’t really get it far enough back. Maybe I should have used a diffuser on the flash. Don’t have one of those at the moment.<\/p>\n
