It’s there. You can feel it. The air is a tiny bit crisper — the sticky humidity is slowly abating. There are more leaves on the grass and the sun is slowly setting earlier and earlier. Summer is passing on the reins to autumn. Autumn, glorious autumn, is my favorite season — and no, it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that it is also my birthday season. Especially when this will be my 41st birthday. Bleah. Much more fun to celebrate the baby’s 1st (on the same day as mine!) But I’m getting ahead of myself.

My 5th child started preschool this week and after a little bit of adjustment told me today as we were walking down the hallway to leave that he “just loves school.” Whew!

This past weekend was so rainy and glum that I pulled out the cast iron pot and made the first beef stew of the season. Enough with the grilling and the fresh vegetable already! Even the autumn food is better — soups and stews and cornbread and gingerbread.
