If wabi-sabi is the the beauty of imperfection than my house would be the picture in the dictionary entry! But I can’t really take a picture of the four-year-old size “dent” in the drywall, or the dog-scratched doors, or the monster-truck pitted tables. You get the idea, I’m sure. Seven children can be a bit hard on a house.
The image in my mind was strongly backlit by the evening sun, a golden light shaping the natural materials and adding dimension to the simple arrangement. Since I can’t get that light naturally in my home, I used a flash with a Rogue grid covered with a full cut of CTO gel (the warm orange gel that makes everything look like the golden hour.) I’m trying my best to master this flash stuff — one little bit at a time. It is actually so freeing to be able to make the light that you want on demand.
Very beautiful light, and I love the dark. What an awesome bowl with yarn!! I’ve never tried gel filters. Very nice!!
Thanks, Beverly! I’ve really only used the warming gel — I’d love to branch out and try some of the others.
one of my favorites
Thanks so much, I really appreciate your comment and your visit!
This really really does look awesome, and l loved your wording about your house. I think we all can relate to this on some points.
Thanks for saying that Barbara! I’m always relieved when people share that their homes are less than perfect too! : )
The beauty is its simplicity!
Hello Jessica
First of all, I love your picture. It’s very moody and verrrryyyy wabi sabi to me.
I so relate to what you write here. When I look at all the pictures passing by, shots from living room tables, nice bowls – like yours – then I feel sometimes such a terrible housewife. Somethings over here are never in place, always look like a mess… and I have no children at home anymore to put monster trucks on the table 😉 I think you ought to know that I for one believe that you are doing a remarkable job with the kids! And I admire you for it.
I know the gels, I have bunches of them. Light is my problem too. I wish I lived in a house where beautiful light streams in, but it doesn’t. I still feel the flash light is so hard to handle though, never use them. So much “trouble” also to put all those flashes in place… 😉
see you soon, here but certainly on IG. xo

You’re way ahead of me on the flash front. Oh, and I love this image.
